Term 2, ROAR Entry 1

Why the Cocks Dominicans, Haitians, and the struggle Fight for Hispaniola
Michele Wucker

Five things I understand

1. In the book, "Why the Cocks Dominicans, Haitians, and the struggle Fight for Hispaniola" I understand that it discusses about how life on the island of Hispanola cock fights were legal and people went to cock fights regularly.

2. I understand that in the book, the setting of the book first takes place in the Dominican Republic, in a small town named Manoguayabo.

3. I understand that in the book, that cock fihting was a dfferent way of life for people; they held fights ina place called "bajo mundo", the under world.
4. I understand that as this book is beginning, it talks about settign and gives a great description of how life in Manoguayabo is and how people lived, and cock fights was a large part of life in the Dominican Republic, at that period.

5. I understand that in this book, there are various descriptions of the government in Dominican Republic, Haiti and how there were, and revolutions and major changes that happended on the island of Hispaniola.

Four questions

1. Who was the person in the very beginning of the story who was danaling the chicken by its foot int he beginning of the story, and will he or she apear in the book again.

2. Why are cock fights legal in Dominican Republic, Hispaniola in general, but not in the U.S ; is it a matter of the governments and how much respect people have for animals.

3. Does this story have a set time frame where it will take place, does it occur in a certain decade - when ?

4. Who were the forst to create cock fights, and how did he / she or they, come about such sport or such game.
Three Words do not know

1. clandestine (page 4)
"The term does not mean "clandestine", since fights are legal here."

2. milieu (page 4)
"The netherworldis the cockfighting milieu of people..."
3.cacophony (page 6)
" the betting is cacophony, but the players are eloquent in this language."

Two quotes, with literary devices

1. " Dangling his dead rooster by its feet, a grizzled cockfighter shuffles out the gate of Manoguayabo cockfighting club though the parking lot..."

- This quote shows imagery of how the "gallero" would be holding its rooster by its foot, symbolizing the loss and how the rooster is lifeless showing the unvictorious rooster.

2. " To enter politics on Hispaniola is, in effect, to enter a fighting ring."

- Ths quote shows personification of how it is describing the island of Hispaniola as a fighting ring. Thus, gving it human characteristics about the island being a place to fight and where conflct is located at.
One sentence summary of what I read
I read the beginning of a book that described life on the island of Hispaniola regarding cock fighting and how life was managed around life style that involved cock fighting.
